So I'm repainting an old road bike, but after sanding off some of the paint I decided it would be cool to just sand all of it down to the metal and give it a few clear coats. But bike-painting ';how to';s always include a rust-proof primer. Yes, you can do it, but will take a bit of prep.
If the frame is steel it will need to be sandblasted and the clear coat applied IMMEDIATELY. Be well advised that anyplace you touch the bike with bare hands, the print will show up on the frame. Also, steel frames will turn a medium grey finish- not stay shiny.
If the frame is aluminum, it will have to be walnut shell blasted. Again, the clear must be applied IMMEDIATELY without touching the frame. This will turn a greyish black eventually unless you take the time to polish the frame before applying.
Regardless of the material, note that you'll need at least 10 coats of clear, and that every single defect will show.Can I paint a bicycle with just a clear coat?
I never heard of a clear primer. Primers are used to cover up differences in the shade of the piece being painted, like bondo etc. You can try a clear coat, the worst that can happen is you have to do it over again.
You could probably just go with a clear coat but im not sure how well it will protect the bike... make sure the metal is really clean before you start and you should be fine just dont leave it in the rain

2007 HD nightster olive pearl paint clear coat?
I want to paint my motorcycle the 2007 HD nightster Olive Pearl color. On the bike, it has a flat finnish, is there a clear coat over it that comes flat, or is there a clear coat already mixed with the Olive Pearl color and sprays on flat withput having to use a clear coat over top. I haven't seen the color and I don't know what the base coat color is, but PPG makes a flat clear that you could mix the olive pearl with. It's DCU 2060 flex n flat clear.
AFIK pearl paint jobs always have the pearl in the clear.

Your talking 4/5 $ a s/f for sanding, staining and the urethane. You don t paint a wood floor and stain it. The stain goes directly to the freshly sanded bare wood floor.

Is it safe to sand out fish eyes on a car then spray clear coat on the paint. that is what the body shop doin?

they should strip it and redo the job, fish eyes are usually caused by silicone under the finish (poor prep work), spraying over them will insure that they will just keep coming back

Depends on many factors. Type of paint, fabric of coat. Ask again giving more info, including how fresh the paint is, is it water based or oil, and if the coat can go through the washing machine. How much value are we talking here?

After a while the water will render the paint watery and you'll begin to see it come off. Try not to smear it, dab at it repeatedly. Initially the paint will be dried and hard; after a while it will beging to become watery. Just keep wetting new parts of the towel and dabbing at the paint. Eventually, all you'll see on the coat is wet spot where the paint was. The water will have disolved the paint, and your repeated dabbing will have removed it.

What causes 1997 Honda Accord paint and clear coat come off?
Honda is the king of taking content out of a vehicle without the customer noticing it until the car gets old. In the 80's and early 90's it was a/c systems that were too small a capacity and poor paint. I recently sold a '02 Accord that was getting dark spots about the size of a pencil eraser on the top surfaces of the metallic gold paint. Honda was notorious for using too thin paint on their cars in the 90's.
