What are the benefits of having a clear coat paint?

aside from giving it a glossy, shiny look. Does the clear coat protects or how does it benefit something?and do i still need to apply clear coat on a paint that is already glossy? What are the benefits of having a clear coat paint?
It depends on the medium, if you are working with oil the clear coat could turn it yellowish within 5 years and it is probably not necessary since oil is already glossy.

Acrylics give you the option of using lots of different gels and mediums that can give you the desire shine. acrylic is like painting with plastic(latex) so you don't really need that much protection.

an extra coat will definitely provide extra protection but it could also change the desired look. the best thing to do is to start with the proper medium (depending on what the end result should be) along with the canvas, paper or surface this will assure that the medium you use is well absorbed by the surface. This represent more than %60 of the durability of the piece.

Don't use an extra coat unless you don't have the desired shine, or you painted with the wrong material. Also remember to consider lighting and where your piece will be displayed, too much gloss can create reflection. What are the benefits of having a clear coat paint?
Well, it may appear glossy at first, but there's fading, so I suppose a glossy protection would help
