There is a stain block product called ';Kilz'; sold at home depot and paint stores, too. It even comes in aerosol/ spray cans. That's the best stuff to seal knots.
You can buy proper knotting sealer in any decorators shop or store. End of problem!

A small can will last you the rest of your life!

Good luck.
Not sure about US but in UK you can buy a product called Knotting to coat knots and seal them.
knot sealer--ask the paint department worker for it.
I swear by ';Bin';. This works great for covering all sorts of defects- knots, crayon, ink, blood. It's just awesome!
You have to apply 2 coats of shellack to seal knots..then paint over !~
talk to the people at the paint store.

I've personally used a product called KILZ
