When painting a car for the first time would it be better to use enamel paint or just clear coat it?

well enamel paints are way outdated.... urethane based paints are used on cars these days.... you can get them in 1 stage... 2 stage ... and 3 stage.....

1 stage is best for solid colors with no metalics... the clear and the color are basicly mixed in together and looks best when sanded and buffed (for solid colors)

2 stage is clear coat on top of a colored base coat (best for any metalic and most pear/metalic colors also good for solid colors) almost all factory and custom paint jobs are done this way

3 stage is for your candy paint jobs and really expensive pearls...a candy paint job is a solid base coat... a colored transparent coat... and then a clear coat... (very hard to spray) not for an amature...

one of the top brand names in urethane paint is PPG... i recomend them they are a very good paint company if you are doing an all over paint job or even trying to match a repair pannel to an OEM paint job
