You can use any really, Acrylic is water based and would be fine.Depending on the required finish you could also use just ordinary emulsion paint. But Acrylics are more suited for interiors. What paint can be used as a base coat if i am using acryic paint for my top coat?
As a practicing artist, this is what I have found...

You have four choices--in descending order. All of which will work.

Your goal is to create a ';new'; surface that will evenly receive your paint.

So,. Coat the wood with a coat of Gesso, a product designed as a primer for acrylic artists paints.

Or, prime with KILZ latex stain blocking paint...spray of liquid

Or paint on any latex primer paint

Or 2 coats of any flat latex paint
You are wondering what type of primer you should use? Gesso would be okay.
Yep. Gesso. At least three coats.
