What is the difference in using 1 coat primer and 1 coat paint rather than 2 coats paint on new drywall?

Primer has a very different purpose than paint. Primer's main purpose is to bond to walls. Some primers have additional properties like covering stains (some stains can bleed through new paint) and prevent mold formation.

Paint is used add color and shine to the walls, so it's ingredients reflect that purpose. Primer's main purpose is to bond to the walls, and its ingredients reflect that.

Some surfaces, like glossy surfaces, are difficult for paint to stick to, but primer is made to stick to pretty much anything. Once the primer is on the surface, paint can stick very well to the primer. Good bonding between primer and wall, and primer and paint means less peeling and bubbling of the new paint, and the new paint will last longer. So instead of having to repaint in 15 years, you can get away with 25 to 30 years.

Choose the right primer for your needs. There are primers for metal and wood surfaces. If you are painting a bathroom where there will be a lot of steam, get a waterproof primer with mold killer. If you have stains on the wall, get a primer which has the ability to cover stains (some stains have a nasty habit of bleeding through the new paint).

I painted my bathroom about 10 years ago. It's a small bathroom, so I was able to go wild. I used 3 coats of waterproof mold-preventing primer and 2 coats of paint. So far, no peeling and no mold.

Primer dries really fast, so as soon as I finished one coat, I was able to start on the next coat right away. Read the directions on how fast the primer dries. What is the difference in using 1 coat primer and 1 coat paint rather than 2 coats paint on new drywall?
you better use a (drywall primer). it acts as a bonding agent for the paint as it blocks the paints moisture and is also used make the walls more seamless. if you paint over the drywall without a primer be prepared for the paint to start peeling off. trust me i know because i have done it.

Sleazy gives very good info, especially regarding bonding. Additionally, priming a new drywall surface gives the opportunity to see and thus correct imperfections in the drywall finishing; some primers are sandable whereas paint is not. After priming, 2 coats of paint are recommended for even coverage.
If you use primer first its to help so the drywall wont suck in all the paint..and if there is any scratches in the drywall the primer will help fill in the marks also.

But I've used just paint but it takes a little extra, but it still looks just as good. Now a ';profesional'; of course will tell you primer is a must but not really. Its a matter of opinion
